A Study of Sensory Learning in a Garden Classroom: Enhancing Student Engagement and Achievement FOR ALL in Outdoor Education

This design consultation project focused on creating flexible learning spaces within a classical design of a new building for the EHB future teachers college. The project aimed to provide opportunities for learning “in the spaces between classrooms, hallways, stairways, small study rooms, and outdoor terraces.

The Vasa Lab was designed and built within the Ixelles museum and was specifically tailored to preschoolers. The design featured interactive spaces that allowed children to explore and interact with Vasarely’s artworks and preschool concepts. The activities were set up to speak to each child’s varying interests and abilities, freeing them and the teachers from too many rules and instructions..

This small urban space was designed to be inspiring and inviting for young children. It incorporated ideas from the Reggio Emilia approach with various materials and found objects children could use to explore different concepts. The central idea of the space was to provide a space for children that fostered hands-on play and unstructured learning.
